]]>At the time of completion, the project was the largest municipal project delivered via Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and one of the first public safety facilities in Ontario delivered through this collaborative delivery model. Working within a unified team of project stakeholders, general contractors and constructors, our team led the functional planning and participated in the conceptual architecture. We were Architect of Record, Engineer of Record for mechanical, electrical and civil engineering services, and provided landscape architecture services.
Co-locating police, fire, and EMS services allowed for synergies with shared, gym, and building services while maintaining separate areas for each service with different access and security measures. A common entrance allows for connection with the visiting public and between the police, fire and EMS staff.
This LEED certified building was designed to accommodate future expansion including an on-site joint training centre, and can accommodate photovoltaic panels. Measures to control energy usage ranged from an efficient building envelope design to incorporating lighting controls and LED lights on sensors.
Low Impact Development measures were implemented to provide water quality treatment and groundwater recharge. Flows in excess of the minor drainage system are captured by the stormwater management facility for treatment and flow attenuation.

]]>Located on a two-block site in downtown Calgary in the province of Alberta, Canada, the Calgary Courts Centre consists of a pair of 22 and 24-story towers linked by a 26-story atrium. The project includes an underground parking garage, and incorporates a generous new urban park. The glass enclosed atrium infuses the entire building with natural light and allows for extensive views of the Rocky Mountains and downtown Calgary.
The centre’s design creates a distinct symbol for the Provincial Court, the Court of Queens Bench, and the future Court of Appeal, while housing:
AECOM provided comprehensive planning and design of the courtrooms, closely coordinating with the design of the centre’s interior. The principal architect was Kasian Architecture with Norr Limited/Carlos Ott as design architects.

]]>In addition to reporting to the Calgary Airport Authority, AECOM will provide project, design and preconstruction management services, accounting, cost estimating, scheduling and administrative services for the entire program, which includes efficiency upgrades to Pier B/C, coordination with other related terminal development projects and programming and design of a new Pier E-International/Transborder facility.
The initial stages have commenced with production of the project definition document (PDD) including design development of the new E pier. The project will be phased to ensure the facility continues to function under existing airport operations.

]]>Our team’s new vision for the park was developed in close collaboration with the City of Laval. It is an essential gathering location where visitors can enjoy green spaces and cultural events, discover gardens and wildlife, and take part in a wide selection of sports and outdoor activities. In addition to enhancing the user experience, our concept focused on achieving carbon neutrality by reducing carbon emissions to zero and integrating sustainable design elements such as geothermal energy, solar power, green roofs, rainwater recovery and on-site waste management.
In the center of the park, a brand-new Maison agro-horticole (MAH) will become a benchmark for showcasing innovation in horticulture and urban agriculture. Partnerships will be explored with local stakeholders such as the neighboring Centre de formation horticole de Laval and producers in the agri-food sector. In addition to being a hub for exchanges, training and research, the MAH will form the core of the park’s horticultural and agricultural operations, thus allowing the Centre de la nature to transition towards a circular economy (through recovery of organic material) and achieve the highest standards in sustainable management.
AECOM won an award in the Landscapes & Territories category at the 16th Grands Prix du Design (INT.design) for the Centre de la nature master plan which was recognized for its harmony between functionality and aesthetics and its innovation in urban agriculture.

]]>For the stormwater facility our team provided environmental remediation, design, and construction administration services while collaborating with other engineering and landscape architecture firms and a local artist. We provided environmental services and site rehabilitation studies, obtained regulatory approvals, completed geotechnical work, designed the hydraulic structures and piping components, performed the global hydraulic analysis, and completed construction inspections and administration.
The design of this treatment facility focused on the incorporation of pre-existing sensitive wetlands and habitat, promoting the creation of a balsam poplar forest and integration of natural wetland habitats to increase biodiversity. The design also uses concrete structures as artistic features, reflecting a project-wide focus on both form and function.
As the water moves through the concrete structures, it undergoes the initial stages of treatment. It then flows to the wetland, where the plants in the marshy conditions remove turbidity and nutrients that would not be removed in a conventional system. Eventually, the water is discharged into the river through two valves which help mitigate fish migration into the system.
The system is designed to function utilizing gravity, but without gates and electronic monitoring systems. Its features also allow for pedestrian access to infrastructure, giving visitors an inside look at the treatment process. The biodiverse park is now a vibrant public space featuring walking and cycling paths, boardwalks, viewpoints, and an array of wildlife.
This award-winning facility advances The City’s goals for environmental sustainability by restoring the landscape and maintaining river health by limiting the amount of sediment discharged into the Bow River. Once a contaminated industrial eye-sore, the space is now a beautiful, vibrant, and functional public asset.
